Cobourg Police Lower Flags

Cobourg Police Flags at Half-Mast.png

In the wake of the horrific domestic terrorist attack in Las Vegas, Nevada, where at least 59 people, including three Canadians, are now confirmed dead and over 500 wounded, Cobourg Police Chief Kai Liu has directed that the Cobourg Police Service place all flags at half-mast to express its collective sense of sorrow and loss.

Flags are recognized as paramount symbols of a nation, and the act of half-masting is a dramatic visual statement that speaks to the sense of loss that is shared.

With hundreds of people from many countries being injured or murdered, the Police Service’s heart-felt respect and remembrance is offered in this gesture, for the families and friends of those who have lost their lives, and for those who have been injured, with the hope for a speedy recovery.

Ontario Minimum Wage Increases October 1st

Kathleen Wynne.jpg

A reminder that on Sunday, Ontario is increasing the general minimum wage to $11.60.

This will be the latest minimum wage increase over four consecutive years.

The general minimum wage will again increase to $14 on January 1, 2018, and to $15 on January 1, 2019.

This would be followed by annual increases at the rate of inflation.

Ontario's legislation would also ensure part-time and temporary help agency workers are paid the same hourly wage as full-time workers, introduce paid sick days for every worker, enable at least three weeks' vacation after five years with the same employer and step up enforcement of employment laws.

Big Beat Live

Madman's Window.jpg

The beautiful Capitol Arts Centre in Port Hope was packed last night, as the curtain went up for the first Cameco Northumberland fundraising concert for 89.7 FM.

Seven outstanding local bands kept the crowd entertained for over three hours as they played Celtic, Modern Pop, R&B, Classic Blues, Country and Western, Country Rock and Metal Rock.

One audience member described it as a buffet of music.

Small Town Radio Chair John Hill said “Northumberland 89.7 is volunteer-run but the station has ongoing expenses.  We do not receive government assistance or major corporate funding.

Local advertising pays the rent and utilities but for costly equipment purchases and replacement, we have to look to the community for support.

Offering local talent at a fundraising concert not only assists our outstanding homegrown entertainers but provides the opportunity for the station to earn much-needed financial assistance.”

He thanked Madman’s Window, Cale Crowe, The Offbeats, Kim Doolittle, The Fabulous Tonemasters, Gentlemen Husbands and Arizona Bliss for volunteering their talent and time.

John Henderson.jpg

The Town of Cobourg is beginning the process of preparing its 2018 Municipal Operating and Capital Budget, including Police and the Library.

It is inviting citizens to participate in the consultation process by sharing ideas on municipal service priorities and how they would like to see municipal tax dollars spent.

Deputy Mayor John Henderson said Council’s ultimate goal is to align the Town’s budget process, business plans, asset management plans and the Strategic Plan.

The process for reviewing the budget begins in October when the Management Team reviews their respective department’s preliminary budget numbers.

The Budget Committee, consisting of the Chief Administrative Officer, Deputy Mayor and the Treasurer then review the proposed budget and invite citizens to provide their feedback before a submission to Council for review.

Input and submissions can either be emailed to the Deputy Mayor at jhenderson@cobourg.ca or by attending the Budget consultation meeting on October 25th and making a presentation.

Each presenter will be allotted 15 minutes and should contact the Municipal Clerk Lorraine Brace in advance at 905-372-4301 or by email at lbrace@cobourg.ca.

A schedule of the budget hearings is available on the Town’s website at www.cobourg.ca.
