Cobourg will join in jubilee celebrations

By Cecilia Nasmith

Count Cobourg among the Commonwealth communities celebrating Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee, as she becomes the first British monarch to reach the milestone of 70 years on the throne.

Many details are still to come, but the date is definite, Mayor John Henderson told Cobourg council Monday – and a few days early. Though the United Kingdom has designated June 2 as the official day, Cobourg's celebrations will take place May 29 in light of June 2 being the provincial election day.

The meeting saw councillors share information about other upcoming events, such as one that might appeal to anyone with an interest in history – the Cobourg Legion's Battle of the Atlantic dinner on April 30 at 6 p.m.

“There's a great guest speaker – a naval historian who will tell the story of the HMCS Cobourg and its relationship to the Battle of the Atlantic,” Henderson said.

Tickets are $30 each, if you are interested.

Emily Chorley reminded everyone that tickets are still available for the June 16 Blue Rodeo concert at the Cobourg Community Centre, which is also a fundraiser for local hockey. They are available at the Victoria Hall Concert Hall as well as at the Experience Cobourg website.

And Adam Bureau said that the town is working with the Cobourg Lions' and Rotary clubs on the 2022 Waterfront Festival, July 1 to 3. This work includes ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations, and the website will be updated as events shape up.
