Northumberland 89.7 FM is proud to welcome Dave Vaughan to the airwaves.

An award-winning novelist, Dave, made a sharp left turn from a long career in transportation into the far less predictable world of fiction. These days, the only passengers he deals with are imaginary, often loud, unpredictable, and terrible at following directions.

Based in Cobourg, Dave spends his time avoiding yard work, spoiling his grandchildren, and wrangling the ever-growing cast of oddball characters that insist on living rent-free in his imagination. His writing leans toward the unusual, the unexpected, and occasionally the unsettling—and he wouldn’t have it any other way.

Starting in April 2026, Dave brings that same creative energy to Northumberland 89.7 FM with a brand-new weekly show featuring music, conversation, and whatever else might come to mind. (Show name and time to be announced.)

Northumberland 89.7 FM is seeking journalists, storytellers, and news readers who are ready to make a difference in keeping your community informed.

The News Department requires more volunteers to help keep our listeners up-to-date on what is happening locally. Looking to start your career in journalism, or wanting to get back in the industry? This is a great way to do so. We provide all the training, opportunity, and technical support required to help you be successful. For more information please visit the radio station at 1000 Elgin Street West in Cobourg or contact danjones@northumberland897.ca.

Volunteer Spotlight

Pete Smith

After 26 years in building maintenance, Pete retired to Cobourg and turned a lifelong dream into reality at Northumberland 89.7 FM. Starting as a newsreader in 2014 and later hosting PostMERIDIAN, Pete went on to create Swingtime in 2020—a show now heard on 14 stations. From big bands and crooners to jazz and adult contemporary, Swingtime is your relaxing hour of easy listening favourites.

“I get a lot of enjoyment from this musical stroll down memory lane and I think you will too.  So, if you haven’t already, I invite you to tune in to N897 FM and stop by the Cloud Room, high atop the Hotel Nostalgia, because we have a good time every time on Swingtime!” - Pete Smith Host of Swingtime!

Pet of the Week

Pet of the Week

Pet of the Week: Magnus

Breed: Rough Collie Mix
Age: 1.5 years old
Sex: Male, neutered
Size: Medium
Personality: Intelligent, Loyal, Resilient

Magnus is a handsome 1.5-year-old Rough Collie mix with a gentle soul and a brilliant mind. This sweet, intelligent boy is looking for a patient and loving home that will help him continue building confidence and feeling safe in the world.

Magnus has made incredible progress with the support of his trainer and is steadily overcoming his fear and reactivity toward other dogs—challenges that began after he was attacked in the past. Despite this, his resilience shines through every day, and with the right guidance, love, and consistency, Magnus is well on his way to becoming his best self.

Magnus would thrive in a calm, quiet home without young children, as his natural herding instincts can sometimes come into play. A committed adopter will also have access to continued training support to ensure both Magnus and his new family feel confident and set up for success.

If you would like to meet Magnus, we kindly ask that you send an email to info@northumberlandhs.com or give us a call at 905-885-4131 to set up an appointment, as Magnus is currently in foster care.
