Our station provides a fast-paced, exciting and rewarding environment in which individuals are engaged and

inspired.

We provide news, entertainment and information to our listening audience. Northumberland 89.7 FM broadcasts

from our studio in Cobourg.

We are looking for dynamic and motivated individuals to fulfil key positions on our Board of Directors.

We also have immediate Board openings for the positions of:

• Secretary

• Treasurer

These positions are critical to the success of the station and form part of the Board Executive Group.

LJI JOURNALIST WANTED 

WHO ARE WE? 

Northumberland 89.7 FM is a not-for-profit community base radio station, providing news, sports, views, events coverage, music and a variety of programs to residents of Northumberland County. 

Northumberland 89.7 FM was an idea formulated in 2009 and our official on-air launch was December 2013. We have recently celebrated our 10 Year Anniversary during which time we have become a trusted voice for providing in-depth news coverage. 

We have a small team of 3 Full Time Employees with a large and dedicated volunteer base of over 50 people. 

We deliver news through our Radio Programming 8 times a day during the week and 3 times a day on weekends and Holidays. We will report breaking news as it happens during our live on-air programming as needed. We post our news stories, often fuller, more in depth versions to our website. 

Local Journalism Initiative (LJI) Program 

The station’s hyperlocal journalism is supported by the Community Radio Fund of Canada and funded by the Government of Canada. The news programming is focuses on diverse, local communities that are underserved in the Canadian news landscape. The goal is to increase the production of community and civic news in those areas and to make that news more accessible across the country. We’re elevating original, local community news. 

New Reporter/Journalist 

  • Full time 5-month contract position with the goal of retaining the applicant for Permanent fulltime placement 

  • Salary is $4349.40 per month on this 5-month contract paid bi-weekly. All applicable Provincial and Federal Taxes as well as any other government requirements will be deducted (EI, CPP) 

  • Start Date: November 1, 2024, or sooner 

  • Flexible scheduling to facilitate field reporting. Morning, afternoon Monday to Friday with occasional weekend work. Will provide time-off in lieu of extra hours worked. 

Job Requirements 

  • Hold a degree or diploma in Journalism, Communications or Arts from an accredited academic or technical institution OR have equivalent experience in broadcast, print/digital journalism or writing (minimum 1 year experience) 

  • Excellent communication (listener and conversational) along with strong writing skills 

  • Vibrant storytelling with an emphasis in the local news using critical thinking, ability to analyze issues, research, remain impartial, and a strong desire to seek the truth and report 

  • Deadline-driven and have an eye for detail with strong skills in both a team setting and with independent work. 

  • Audio production skills are an asset but not a requirement - we will train you. 

  • Social media savvy, for both posting and extensive research purposes 

Other qualifications/requirements 

  • Understanding diversity, different perspectives and sensitive/complex issues such as environmental concerns, mental health, poverty, Indigenous rights, LGBTQ+ rights, etc.) 

  • A desire to drive news and interest in reporting on a range of topics to Northumberland listeners, municipal, regional and federal politics, courts, affordable housing, employment, etc. 

  • Attend editorial meetings with station and LJI coordinators as needed.

Media Sales Representative

We are looking for a radio sales representative to call on businesses in the Northumberland County Region. Previous sales or media experience is an asset; however, we are willing to train the right candidate.  You are an outgoing, enthusiastic, mature individual. You will be comfortable calling on local merchants, learning to understand their marketing challenges and help them by providing solutions through advertising on our radio station.

This is a commission based position and can be full or part time. The more time and effort you put in, the more you will earn.
