Cobourg issues weather reminder to residents

By Cecilia Nasmith

With winter weather ahead, the Town of Cobourg's Public Works Division has issued a reminder for residents of snow-clearing safety rules to ensure everyone's safety and to make it easier for the town's snow-clearing vehicles to operate safely.

Bylaw 081-2014 requires residents to keep the sidewalks in front of their homes clear of snow and ice within 24 hr. of a snowfall, and the Highway Traffic Act forbids the plowing or shoveling of snow onto any roadway.

As they do their clearing, residents are urged to keep their gas meters clear of snow and ice and to avoid shoveling or blowing snow onto or around fire hydrants – and to ensure fire escapes, exit doors and other emergency-exit points are clear of snow and ice.

On garbage day, place your refuse and recycling where it can be seen clearly and collected safely.

Do not park on the street overnight. Vehicles blocking the work of municipal snowplows will be fined or towed. And if you are driving around snowplows, leave plenty of space for maximum safety.
