Millwork business moves to Campbellford

By Cecilia Nasmith

The former Dart Cup plant near Campbellford, which closed suddenly in September 2019, will soon be occupied by Mirmil Products.

The custom architecture millwork company has been operating in Quinte West for a half-century, On June 30, it will move to the 165,000-sq.-ft. State-of-the-art facility in Trent Hills. The new premises will allow the company to expand its current operations, as well as the scope of work the company performs.

The closure of Dart Cup put 50 people out of work. Mirmil currently has about 70 employees, but President and Chief Executive Officer Travis Walker expects to have a work force of well over 100, once the new facility is fully equipped and running.

“We'll be looking for cabinet makers, machine operators, production associates, as well as drafting and engineering personnel,” Walker said in the announcement shared by Northumberland-Peterborough South MPP David Piccini.

“These are quality full-time jobs with a full benefits package and excellent working conditions in a spacious facility with state-of-the-art equipment.”

Mirmil is one of a handful of highly specialized architectural millwork companies in North America, whose products are used in hospitals, universities, high-end hotels, bars, casinos, stadia and other public buildings throughout the US and Canada.

The company also works on some of the highest-profile largest commercial construction projects in the world. Clients include Disney, MGM Resorts, Hardrock Hotels, Yale and Harvard universities, MIT, Loews Hotels and The Westin Maui.

As it expands and increases capacity, Mirmil will continue to work with the many Quinte businesses, suppliers and subcontractors that have been so instrumental to its success – even as it builds new relationships with its new Northumberland neighbours.

Walker expressed his hope of partnering with local high schools and post-secondary institutions to expose young people to the kinds of career opportunities offered in the trades.

“We want to help keep young people in our communities,” Walker said.

“And one of the best ways of doing that is to offer then quality well-paying jobs. By partnering with schools and colleges, we'll be able to show youth some of the great careers that are waiting for them right here at home.”
