Cobourg council proclaimed Accessibility Awareness Week May 31 through June 4 at this week's committee-of-the-whole meeting.
A banner will be hung at Victoria Hall, a budget of $2,500 will help secure a keynote speaker to kick off the event, and council will “participate in different events throughout the week to the best of their availability and schedule,” according to the motion made by Councillor Aaron Burchat.
“Obviously some of this would be virtual,” Burchat added.
The banner attracted a great deal of attention, as it was described by the councillor as a beautiful, artistic creation by one of the advisory committee members. Though the motion called for it to be hung at Victoria Hall, that public building remains closed.
“We will try to work with building maintenance to find somewhere,” Municipal Clerk Brent Larmer said.
Larmer recalled that it was made in time for what would have been Accessibility Awareness Week 2020, but they were not able to use it.
Hanging it outside would make it visible, but he preferred not to see it weathered. He guessed they would end up hanging it inside Victoria Hall and posting a video on-line so people could see it.
Larmer stressed the importance of not cancelling the observances for a second year.
“We wanted to make sure we have participation from our community,” he said.
“It will be recorded, it will be available to the public. I think it will be a good thing to bring our community together.”
