The Town of Cobourg has issued a reminder to tree owners to keep them healthy by watering them.
Signs of stress appear in both new and mature trees during hot summer months and dry seasons, the press release said – browning leaves and veins, wilting leaves, premature dropping of leaves. Even conifers may turn yellowish or reddish-purple.
“Drought stress can lead to permanent damage and weakens trees, which can make them more susceptible to insects and diseases,” the bulletin said.
The recommendation is a slow, deep soaking at the trunk at least once or twice a week if there is no rain (to conserve water, consider using dehumidifier water or a rain barrel for this purpose).
As for amount to be used per watering, 70 litres (or 15.5 gallons) is recommended for a young tree. Older and larger trees require 22 litres (or five gallons) per square meter.
“The town's forestry is an important asset to our community that requires care and maintenance,” the message added.
“We appreciate any help from our residents.”
