Cobourg Fire Department, Enbridge Gas partner for Safe Community Project Zero
Enbridge Gas and the Cobourg Fire Department have announced a partnership through Safe Community Project Zero - a public education campaign with the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council that provides more than 10,000 alarms to residents in 50 municipalities across Ontario.
Deputy chief Kevin Ashfield said the Cobourg Fire Department received 210 combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
The contribution to Cobourg is part of a $315,000 investment this year by Enbridge Gas in Project Zero in an attempt to bring fire and carbon monoxide related deaths to zero. Enbridge has provided more than 86,000 alarms to Ontario fire departments during the past 15 years, which Ashfield is very familiar with.
Chris Doig, Eastern Region Supervisor Operations, Enbridge Gas says “Properly maintaining fuel burning equipment is the best way to reduce potential exposure to carbon monoxide, and an alarm is a critical second line of defense for protection.”
When properly installed and maintained, combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms help provide the early warning to safely escape from a house fire or carbon monoxide exposure. Carbon monoxide is a toxic, odourless gas that is a by-product of incomplete combustion of many types of common fuels.
Ashfield said this campaign is another opportunity for public education.
