ROLLS goes rural

By Cecilia Nasmith

The Municipality of Port Hope has partnered with Community Care Northumberland to offer a specialized ROLLS accessible-transit service that reaches into the municipality's rural areas.

The result is door-to-door transportation to registered eligible patrons who live in a rural area and have accessibility needs through an advanced appointment system.

Mayor Olena Hankivsky said the pilot project “seeks to meet the needs of some of our most vulnerable eligible residents who don't otherwise have access to public transportation.

“Responsibly trialing the program until the end of the year allows staff to gather ridership data and provide council with an informed and evidence-based report prior to council making any decisions on a potential permanent rural transit solution,” Hankivsky said in the press release.

“I look forward to the launch of the program and commend staff on this provisional extension of service for our residents.”

Hours for the new Rural ROLLS program will be offered by the municipality on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, Community Care will provide the service to eligible rural residents with subsidy from the municipality – details are available at commcare.ca
