NLC announces fall series

By Cecilia Nasmith

Northumberland Learning Connection announces a fall series with three events, for which the first tickets go on sale Aug. 23.

With more than a dozen years of educational series on timely topics – ranging from geopolitical entities such as China and Newfoundland to topics in the news like Artificial Intelligence and Exploring Islam – NLC brought experts to the Cobourg-Port Hope community for lectures and presentations, and even organized ancillary outings and field trips to ensure local residents were informed by the best.

Forced to cancel a spring 2020 series on Alberta, NLC successfully pivoted to stand-alone Zoom sessions with a variety of amazing speakers discussing timely issues, from former Conservative Senator Hugh Segal's look at the concept of basic income to Howard University's Keneshia N. Grant exploring the impact of migration on voting patterns and democracy.

They have now announced three sessions for the fall.

Sept. 23 - When More Is Not Better – Rotman School of Management Dean Emeritus Roger Martin (the business strategist named number-one management thinker in the world) will discuss the obsession with economic growth. Tickets at $10 each go on sale Aug. 23.

Oct. 21 – My Best Mistake – Award-winning Canadian broadcast producer and personality Terry O'Reilly (host of the CBC Radio One series The Age of Persuasion and Under The Influence) shares his experiences in the world of advertising. Tickets at $10 each go on sale Sept. 21.

The date, venue and ticket options for a third session are yet to be announced, a session on Climate Change: Pathways To Net Zero which will include Ralph Torrie, Catherine Abreu, Yung Wu and Diana Fox Carney.

Meanwhile, NLC encourages you to consider supporting the Canadian Federation of University Women-Northumberland event on Sept. 8. In honour of the group's 30 years of scholarships and bursaries, the group is welcoming Canada's first female astronaut Dr. Roberta Bondar for a 12:45 p.m. Zoom session as a scholarship fundraiser.

Her talk Open To The Universe: Changing Perspectives on a Moving Planet will share her insights into the natural world with a focus on migratory birds and the impacts of climate change and human activity.

Tickets are $65, available on the CFUW-Northumberland website – where you can also purchase autographed copies of her book The Arid Edge of Earth for $30, including delivery.

Meanwhile, for those wishing to purchase NLC tickets, check out the NLC website.
