Lees named Port Hope's Outstanding Citizen

By Jeff Gard

Port Hope celebrated the tremendous contributions made by volunteers and other achievements during its 35th annual Civic Awards ceremony Thursday night at the Capitol Theatre.

Jeff Lees was the recipient of the Outstanding Citizen award. The former longtime Port Hope councillor has had meaningful involvement with the Port Hope Kinsmen, Float Your Fanny Down the Ganny committee, Critical Mass Art, the HBIA, the Port Hope Fair, Santa Claus Parade and the Highway of Heroes ride for more than 30 years.

"I've lived here my whole life. The Outstanding Citizen is a great honour. I've always lived here, raised my family here, Port Hope means the world to me. I've always tried to help people out and they've obviously helped me out. I'm so lucky to have so many friends and family in Port Hope and this award means the world to me," Lees told Northumberland 89.7.

Maeve Burns was named Port Hope's Outstanding Youth, presented to an individual in recognition of outstanding achievements and volunteer contributions within their school and community.

In addition to her full-time studies and working 30 or more hours each week, Burns put in 100 hours of volunteer work in a short period of time. She also wanted a school and community where everyone felt heard and could experience a sense of belonging and her advocacy led to the raising of the pride flag in the front foyer of her school.
