Habitat obtains Daintry Crescent lot

By Cecilia Nasmith

The Town of Cobourg is pleased to confirm the donation of land at 604 Daintry Crescent to Habitat For Humanity Northumberland.

Both are party to the Agreement of Purchase and Sale that transfers ownership of the vacant property located on the southeast side of Daintry Crescent, the culmination of a process that began last October when Habitat submitted a proposal to council for a donation of that land in order to build a single detached home.

Like many communities, the Town of Cobourg is experiencing a growing need for both affordable- and rental-housing options. And Habitat stated at the time of their presentation that they already have a list of pre-approved families waiting for affordable housing who require housing such as the dwelling that could be erected on this site.

The Agreement of Purchase and Sale gives the town the opportunity to review the design of this new build. Habitat will work with town planning staff to ensure the new build complements the character of the surrounding neighbourhood.

“The Habitat model provides purchasing flexibility to families, based on what they can comfortably afford,” Habitat Executive Director Meaghan Macdonald explained in the announcement.

“Once a family has been selected, they will provide additional contribution to the development in the form of sweat equity. This model allows us to secure affordable housing, while facilitating an opportunity for individuals and families to contribute back to our community schools and infrastructure through their property taxes.”

Habitat builds homes with as many donated goods and materials as possible in order to keep their costs as low as possible to maximize the number of homes that can be built in partnership with families to achieve strength, stability and independence through affordable home ownership.

Habitat will ensure that the community and neighbouring residents are kept up to date on the Daintry Crescent project with regular mail notifications. An on-site community meeting will be held at a later date to introduce the final design details to residents and address any questions regarding the construction schedule. And a formal ground-breaking ceremony will be planned at a later date.

“The new development at 604 Daintry Crescent will provide an opportunity to bring the community together through the donation of goods and labour,” the announcement said.
