Kids have a role in celebrating Paramedic Services Week

By Cecilia Nasmith

The theme of this year's Paramedic Services Week (May 23 to 29) is Paramedic as Educator – Citizen Ready, and Northumberland Paramedics will observe the occasion by sharing important health and safety tips on their Facebook page (@NorthumberlandParamedics).

Another way they are celebrating is with the children's colouring contest they have launched, with colouring sheets for different age categories at Northumberland.ca/Paramedics. Children in three different age categories (3-5, 6-8 and 9-11) have until May 26 to submit their artwork to be entered into a draw for a chance at some exciting prizes, including toy ambulances, Terry the Traumasaurus stuffed toys, backpacks and more.

County Warden Bob Crate said this is the perfect opportunity to express gratitude to our local paramedics for their tireless work on the front-lines of our health-care system.

“Over the last year, our Northumberland Paramedics have responded to over 20,000 9/11 calls, launched a new Community Paramedicine program to deliver preventative health-care services and adjusted their practices to continue meeting the needs of the community during the global pandemic,” Crate listed in the press release.

“On behalf of county council and all Northumberland residents, I want to applaud this team for their invaluable service to our community. I encourage local families to participate in the Paramedic Services Week colouring contest to help spread some colourful joy and positivity to our front-line workers during these challenging times.”

Finished colouring sheets can be photographed and scanned, submitted by e-mail (to paramedics@northumberland.ca) or dropped off in the drop box located outside the front entrance of the county building at 555 Courthouse Rd., Cobourg.

Paramedics Chief Susan Brown extended her own personal thanks to her team for their dedication and excellence while navigating the challenges of COVID-19.

“Throughout the pandemic, our staff have done a remarkable job on the front lines, safely responding to emergency calls, partnering with local health-care providers to do COVID-19 testing and vaccine administration, and providing new community paramedicine services that are positively impacting local health outcomes,” Brown said.

“We look forward to seeing the artwork from Northumberland kids come in as part of our local celebrations of this important service.”
