No new cases in Norovirus outbreak – Visitor and volunteer restrictions remain in place on 2A medical/surgical unit; maternal/child unit visitors restricted to direct support person only
On Monday, January 20, Northumberland Hills Hospital (NHH) issued a public notice regarding the identification of a cluster of norovirus cases on NHH’s 2A medical/surgical unit.
As of Thursday, January 23, no new symptomatic patients or staff have been identified on 2A or elsewhere in the hospital.
In an abundance of caution, and on the advice of the Maternal/Child Quality and Practice Committee, effective today NHH will also temporarily restrict outside visitors to the Maternal/Child unit in addition to 2A, given the proximity of the two units. While families are understandably eager to visit new mothers in hospital following a birth, for the time being, only one visitor—the direct support person—will be permitted to join Maternal/Child patients. The aim of this temporary step is to further support the team’s ability to maintain infection control efforts.
Northumberland Hills Hospital (NHH) continues to work closely with the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit to restrict further spread of this highly contagious virus and to communicate information. The following is an updated summary of the control measures in place to manage the situation and prevent transmission:
Contact precautions – All identified patients remain on contact precautions (isolation). Isolated patients must remain in their room except when medically indicated procedures are required. Appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required.
No new admissions to the affected unit – 2A is not accepting new admissions and continues to postpone patient transfers to and from other units for the time being.
Strict enforcement of proper hand hygiene using soap and water – Scrupulous hand hygiene is one of the most important infection prevention and control practices to stop transmission of gastrointestinal illness and other infectious diseases. Unfortunately, hand sanitizer is not effective against Norovirus. Thorough hand washing (15 seconds, minimum) with soap and water is required.
Visitor restrictions to 2A – Visitor restrictions remain in place for 2A patients for the time being, with special exceptions evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
NEW – Visitor restrictions to Maternal/Child unit – Effective Thursday, January 23, visitor restrictions have been added for the Maternal/Child unit. Only one visitor—the direct support person—will be permitted to join Maternal/Child patients. Visiting is not currently impacted in other parts of the hospital.
Temporary suspension of volunteer activities on 2A and (NEW) Maternal/Child – To minimize the risk of spreading, all volunteering activities on 2A, including Maternal/Child, have been temporarily suspended.
Enhanced environmental cleaning – Increased cleaning of the unit and increased cleaning of equipment shared between patient rooms continues.
Monitoring – any patient who develops new on-set of any of the following symptoms (nausea, diarrhea and vomiting) will be placed on contact precautions.
Proactive communication – Public notices remain on all appropriate hospital entrances as well as to the doorways within/leading to 2A and the Maternal/Child unit to promote awareness, with reminders regarding hand hygiene requirements.
