Logel announces his retirement

By Cecilia Nasmith

After one leave of absence, a return and a subsequent leave of absence, Alnwick-Haldimand Township Mayor John Logel has officially announced his retirement.

The announcement cites health reasons, adding that this change is for the benefit of both himself and his immediate family.

Already filling in for Logel, Deputy Mayor Gail Latchford has accepted the position as Mayor. Councillor Sherry Gibson has accepted the position to replace Latchford as Deputy Mayor, and a council vacancy will be declared at their Jan. 9 meeting.

The new mayor will also be officially sworn in as the township's representative on Northumberland County council at that group's Jan. 29 meeting.

Logel spent one term in Alnwick-Haldimand Township as a councillor before running for mayor and winning that seat in the 2014 election. He won re-election to that post in 2018.

Logel said in his announcement that he “really enjoyed being part of the township council, and I want to thank all my fellow councillors and the staff for all the support they provided through each of my three terms of council.”

The township offered its thanks to Logel for his dedication, wishing him the best in his future endeavours.

Northumberland County council also added its thanks.

“John’s balanced perspective in council debate and the vigorous energy he always applied to his work as both councillor and warden will certainly be missed,” Warden Bob Sanderson stated.

“John has been a key contributor to advancing important priorities for our community and, on behalf of council and staff, we share with him our best wishes for this well-earned retirement.”
