Cobourg lowers flags for Day of Mourning

By Cecilia Nasmith

The Town of Cobourg today joins Northumberland County, Northumberland Hills Hospital and municipalities and organizations nation-wide in lowering its flags to half-mast in observance of April 28 as a National Day of Mourning for all who have lost their lives or suffered injury or illness as a result of a work-related event or tragedy.

“We also honour all of those impacted through their working during the COVID-19 pandemic,” the announcement added.

In Cobourg, flags will fly at half-mast at Building 7, Chris Garrett Park, Cobourg Community Centre, Cobourg Police Services, the fire hall, Jubilee Park, Rotary Harbourfront Park, Victoria Park and Venture 13 Innovation and Entrepreneurship Centre. At Victoria Hall, the occasion will be observed by removing flags entirely, as these flag poles are not equipped with the necessary halyards and pullies to fly a flag at half-mast.

“On behalf of municipal council and all town staff, we pay our respects to those who have lost their lives or suffered injury or illness as a result of a workplace incident,” Chief Administrative Officer Tracey Vaughan said.

“We are also renewing our commitment to protecting the health and safety of all workers who serve our community.”

The Town of Cobourg asks everyone to take a moment today also to acknowledge and remember those who have lost loved ones as a result of a workplace incident, those who continue to suffer and those who are impacted by working throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
