Women's Day luncheon raises $63,000 for Cornerstone

Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre is thrilled to announce that more than $63,000 was raised on their behalf at the seventh annual Women's Day Luncheon on May 11 at Cobourg's Best Western Plus Cobourg Inn and Convention Centre.

Some 300 members of the community showed their support at the silent auction, nights-of-shelter fundraising initiative and live art raffle. The highlight of the event was the keynote presentation from journalist Anna Maria Tremonti, whose captivating story-telling style made her story come alive – not only the impact of violence on her life but also on those she has encountered through her experiences.

“It is so critical to hear from women such as Anna Maria Tremonti, as it reminds us that violence can happen to anyone anywhere at any time,” Cornerstone Executive Director Nancy Johnston said in the announcement

“Hearing Anna Maria share her personal experience, while also leaving you feeling inspired and hopeful that you can make a difference and help to achieve a violence-free future, is what this event is all about – coming together for changes.”

Manager of Fundraising and Communications Carly Cunningham said the luncheon's success would not be possible without an incredible community of supporters.

“From those who attend, donate and contribute to our silent auction to our generous sponsors and dedicated planning committee, everyone plays a role in helping to raise significant funds that support the vital programs and services Cornerstone offers to the community,” Cunningham listed.

The announcement also gave credit to presenting sponsor Lindsey Edwards (NOCO Realty Group) and speaker sponsor Sydney Fairman (Fairman Group), as well as Shoppers Drug Mart (Cobourg), Lubricon Industries Inc., Cobourg Police Service, Cobourg Nissan, Stadke Plumbing and Heating, Port Hope Police Service, Zel Beauty and Karen Chalovich (BMO Nesbitt Burns).

Established in 1983, Cornerstone is an accredited violence-against-women agency working to end gender-based violence by providing accessible, compassionate and best-practice-modeled programs and services, including shelter, counselling, housing supports and prevention through a support system aimed at inspiring hope, creating safety and fostering resilience.
