Celebrate Heritage Week with scavenger hunt

By Cecilia Nasmith

The Town of Cobourg invites the community to celebrate Heritage Week – Feb. 20 to 26 – with the new Heritage Hunt scavenger hunt.

This is an annual occasion when the Ontario Heritage Trust invites Ontarians to celebrate heritage in all its forms, its diverse traditions and cultural expressions – and for individuals and communities to reflect on their contributions to Ontario, how heritage is conserved, promoted and commemorated, and how they might shape the future.

In Cobourg, the Planning Department invites everyone to appreciate the town's built heritage in a new Heritage Hunt activity.

Developed by Heritage Planner Marina Smirnova, this family-friendly activity takes participants on a journey into Cobourg's past, providing education and insights into key design elements and architectural attributes of some of the town's historic residents and landmarks. There will be the opportunity to answer questions at points of interest along the way, then submit their answers for a chance to win some fantastic prizes.

Smirnova said in the announcement that the town and its residents have done a remarkable job in honouring, protecting and celebrating Cobourg's heritage.

“With Family Day approaching, we hope that residents will take the time to participate in this creative challenge to help Cobourg's next generation learn about our history,” Smirnova added.

“The Heritage Hunt is a great tool for both youth and adults to step outside into our community, and perhaps find new appreciation for our built heritage.”

In addition to the Heritage Hunt, you can follow the Town of Cobourg on social media as they celebrate and showcase local heritage and the organizations, volunteers and residents who work hard to protect what makes Cobourg special.

Booklets can be picked up, starting Friday, at Victoria Hall, the Cobourg Community Centre and the Cobourg Public Library. Completed submissions are due by March 1 in the municipal office at Victoria Hall (or scan and e-mail them to msmirnova@cobourg.ca).

Participants who submit the correct answers will be entered into a contest to win one of four $50 gift cards for a local Downtown Cobourg business of their choice.
