NHH announces new Learning Lab

By Cecilia Nasmith

A generous $200,000 gift from BMO Financial Group has supported the creation of a Learning Lab at Northumberland Hills Hospital.

Located on the hospital's second floor, the Learning Lab offers a consolidated place for the clinical-education team to enhance staff training and education – a space that provides centralized access to clinical educators for new and existing staff as well as room for collaboration, course development and planning sessions for workshops and orientation programs.

Plans are also in place, eventually, for the Learning Lab to include a simulation lab that will allow for hands-on skills training and other learning activities.

“Our vision is to provide a welcoming space for staff to practice clinical skills and scenarios with support in a safe environment,” Director of Professional Practice Beth Davis said in the announcement.

“We are deeply grateful to BMO and the (Northumberland Hills Hospital) Foundation for supporting professional development for our clinicians who provide hands-on care.”

Recognizing BMO's on-going commitment to the hospital, a naming installation was unveiled earlier this year to commemorate the space as The Learning Lab – Supported by BMO.

Foundation Chief Executive Officer Rhonda Cunningham said that they had been a proud BMO client for 20 years.

“To enjoy this level of commitment from them speaks volumes to their interest and belief in the important work our Foundation undertakes to help NHH provide great care,” Cunningham added.

BMO Commercial Bank Canada Vice-President Melanie Cook acknowledged the 30-year relationship

“We are thrilled to play a critical role in the development and progress of their clinical education,” Cook said.

“This donation exemplifies our Purpose to Boldly Grow the Good in business and life by creating a space for medical professionals to enhance their skill to continue to learn and exceed expectations.”

BMO's gift will ultimately support the Foundation's Exceptional Community, Exceptional Care campaign, the largest campaign in the hospital's history in support of world-class care and medical technology in Northumberland County. The creation and implementation of The Learning Lab – Supported by BMO aligns with the overall campaign goal of helping the hospital prepare for tomorrow's needs brought on by an aging and growing community, as it will present new opportunities for NHH's collective knowledge and skills to grow and advance to meet evolving demands.
