NLC looks at long-term care in free May 13 session

By Cecilia Nasmith

The issues presented by the current long-term-care model predate the COVID-19 pandemic by decades, but this turn of events has shone a spotlight on the deficiencies.

This is the latest topic to get the Northumberland Learning Connection treatment, with a free May 13 session called Thrive, Not Just Survive – Reimagining Long-Term Care.

Presenters Pat and Hugh Armstrong will take a look at promising practices as they exist both in Canada and around the world in the 7:30 p.m. Zoom event, which kicks off with slides at 7:20 p.m.

Like so many other organizations, NLC was forced to go virtual in 2020, just in time to scuttle a multi-faceted series of presentations and events focusing on Alberta. It shifted to the single-session Zoom format and put out four timely presentations between June and November that offered examinations of how diseases jump species, the concept of a basic income, China's expanding global role and war.

In 2021, the sessions have come almost monthly, the first three asking questions of concern to so many of us. Is the balance of power Black (Jan. 21)? Is Canada at a pandemic pivot point (March 11)? How far is too far in political satire (April 25)?

And on May 13, organizers will offer a program examining what might be possible to make those in long-term care thrive – not just survive.
