Expect George Street and Alice Street obstructions Friday

The Town of Cobourg advises residents that drilling will take place – starting June 17 and scheduled to finish the same day – on George and Alice streets for the replacement and installation of groundwater-monitoring wells.

This is part of the Sustainable Neighbourhood Master Plan for the Tannery District, with the data from these installations helping the town evaluate the readiness of these tannery lands for future redevelopment. Such monitoring has been going on for 10 years, the announcement said, and these older wells are in need of replacement.

Two new groundwater wells and soil probes are also being installed to further monitor and establish soil and groundwater trends.

“The Sustainable Neighbourhood Master Plan for the Tannery District will be a comprehensive over-arching plan to achieve a healthy, vibrant and sustainable neighbourhood in the Tannery District,” the press release said.

WSP Golder will be doing the work on this project, which will include drilling machinery that will at times reduce George Street to one lane. The public is advised to proceed with caution and obey all yield-to-traffic signage or flag persons on duty.
