Communities in Blooming Trouble

Cobourg was recently visited by judges as the Town competes for a national Communities in Bloom designation.  The Town took pride in showing the judges a variety of boulevard gardens.

The day after the judges departed, the Town Bylaw enforcement officer went to work notifying several property owners their boulevard gardens did not comply with the section of a municipal bylaw that restricts growth of plants in boulevard gardens to 30 inches.  Property owners are given 96 hours to cut down offending plants or risk a fine and having the Town do the pruning at the owner’s expense.

One Cobourg resident told Northumberland 89.7 that it is ironic that the Town would allow tall plant growth when it helped in the judging process but threatens property owners with by-law infraction notices immediately following the judging.
