Provinces introducing new rules for LTC

By Ron Messer

In the face of a rapidly-spreading Omicron variant, as well as the possibility of breakthrough cases, provincial officials are bringing in new measures for the long-term care sector.

Coming into effect immediately, visitors are now expected to be fully-vaccinated to get through the front door.

As well, homes are being instructed to increase their audits on infection prevention and control (IPAC).

Further measures will come into effect at 12:01 a.m. Friday, December 17.

Staff, volunteers and caregivers will need to be tested at least twice a week, regardless of vaccination status.

Visitors and support workers will need a negative test either the day before or upon arrival.

Each resident will be restricted to two visitors at a time indoors, and four at a time outdoors.

Measures will be put in place for retirement homes as well, starting December 22.

Staff, volunteers and caregivers will be tested twice a week, regardless of vaccine status and visitors and support workers will be tested every time they arrive.
