Cobourg announces safe Canada Day alternatives

By Cecilia Nasmith

The Town of Cobourg has announced, for a second year, that the Cobourg Canada Day celebrations will once more be a virtual experience designed to unite the community and allow residents to celebrate their national pride from the safety of their homes.

Councillor Adam Bureau, Coordinator of Arts, Culture and Tourism, said that the aim is public safety in accordance with current provincial and health guidelines.

“I encourage all of us as proud Canadians to participate in our many community events, and share our special bond of living in one of the greatest countries in the world and celebrating our freedom, values and diversity,” Bureau said in the announcement.

Along with local community partners, the town is planning a variety of safe virtual activities for all to enjoy.

  • Canada Day Flag Painted Rock Search – The Experience Cobourg team will be hiding painted rocks with the Canadian flag on them around the downtown. Take the family out and track them down. Also, snap some pictures and tag them @ExperienceCobourg and @TownofCobourg to be entered into a draw for four $50 gift cards to a local business of your choice.

  • Canada Day Themed Word Search – Visit www.experiencecobourg.ca to play.

  • Virtual Classic Car Show – Send Experience Cobourg pictures of your classic car decorated for Canada Day to be entered into a draw for three $50 gift cards to a local business of your choice.

  • Colouring Challenge – Get the kids busy with this special challenge by downloading colouring sheets from www.experiencecobourg.ca and submitting their artwork by e-mail to Jackie Chapman Davis (jchapmandavis@cobourg.ca).

  • Sidewalk Chalk Pictures – Take pictures of your most creative Canada Day sidewalk-chalk work, tagged @ExperienceCobourg and @TownofCobourg, to be entered into a draw for three $50 gift cards to a local business of your choice.

  • DBIA Paddle To The “C” Art Exhibit – This show features paddle boards designed by local artists (based on the children's books Paddle-To-The-Sea by Holling C Holling) celebrating the town's deep connection to Lake Ontario and its resilience during the pandemic. Visit www.downtowncobourg.ca for an interactive map of each paddle board location.

  • Heritage Walking Tours – Enjoy the outdoors with a walk through Cobourg's beautiful heritage district. Check out one of the walking tours at https://experiencecobourg.ca/heritage-walking-tours

  • Victoria Beach and splashpad – While the Victoria Park beach will be closed on Canada Day, the splashpad will be open for fun (please respect physical distancing guidelines).

  • Cobourg Wing Wagon Pancake Breakfast – There will be a pancake breakfast on Canada Day from 7 to 10:30 a.m. For a $5 donation, you get three pancakes, three sausages and a beverage (coffee, tea, apple or orange juice), with all proceeds supporting the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation – which directly supports Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre. For more information, visit https://www.facebook.com/cobourg.wingwagon.3

  • National Canada Day Celebrations – This year, artists will celebrate their pride in being Canadian with a live broadcast highlighting our resilience and strengthening the ties that unite us. Visit Canadian Heritage's YouTube channel for the program, as well as exclusive behind-the-scenes footage.

The Town reminds everyone that the traditional Canada Day parade, Movies in the Park and fireworks celebration are cancelled again this year, in accordance with COVID-19 provincial regulations and public-health guidelines.
