Cornerstone will remain open
By Cecilia Nasmith
On the day following Monday's announcement of a provincial shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre issued a press release to say both its residential shelter and Community Resource Centre will remain open – with increased infection-prevention measures in place.
Executive director Nancy Johnston said the agency will continue to make its programs and services available.
“We know the impacts a lockdown can have on gender-based issues and, through our last experience, we know that violence thrives when people are staying in a home with abuse,” Johnston added.
“Thus we remain open and ready to provide support.”
These supports are available in person or over the phone. A face covering is required on the premises, and everyone entering the building will be screened.
As the lockdown comes into effect Dec. 26, the front door will be locked. But those seeking support can still come in for service by ringing the bell and speaking with staff over the intercom.
The Community Resource Centre will be closed Dec. 25 through 28, but will reopen Dec. 29. The residential shelter remains open 24 hours a day.
