Cobourg invites you to a memorial service for the Queen

By Cecilia Nasmith

The Town of Cobourg, in partnership with the Cobourg Legion, invites the public to attend a memorial service commemorating Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on Monday, Sept. 19.

Padre Art King will lead the ceremony at the Victoria Park cenotaph at 10:55 a.m., with an 11 a.m. moment of silence.

Over the decades of her reign, the Queen has visited this community several times. The town's announcement include further information on commemorating these events.

Victoria Park Floral Clock Design
As a special commemoration for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, this spring the town's Parks Department hand-created a special floral clock design. It is still available for public viewing in Victoria Park.

Heritage Walking Tour
The Town of Cobourg was honoured with a June 1973 visit from Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. You can step back in history and re-connect with this occasion by visiting the same important landmarks that His Worship, former Mayor Jack Heenan, took the Queen to in 1973 by downloading the Walking Tour Guide at cobourg.ca/queensjubilee

Jubilee Park Monument
In Cobourg’s Jubilee Park, located on the southwest corner of William and Elgin streets, a monument is dedicated to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. A new etching was added earlier this year to celebrate the Queen’s 70 years of service.

Cobourg Conservation Area Cairn
During their 1973 Royal visit, the Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh planted two silver maple trees at the Cobourg Conservation Area (James Cockburn Park, 700 William St.) and unveiled a cairn to mark the opening of the park officially. Unfortunately, due to the 2013 ice storm, one of the silver maples was lost. However, the other can still be seen, adjacent to the cairn in the park.

The town reminds everyone that a Book of Condolences is set up in the lobby of Victoria Hall (55 King St. W.) for all who would like to sign. This book will be forwarded to the Palace the week of Oct. 3.
