County institutes storm clean-up measure

By Cecilia Nasmith

In the aftermath of Saturday's storm damage, Northumberland County is supporting community clean-up efforts by instituting special temporary waste-disposal measures.

Tipping fee rebate – Effective immediately, until June 30, residents can apply for a tipping fee rebate to offset any waste-disposal-related costs incurred at the county's Community Recycling Centre's as a result of the May 21 wind storm. Residents can apply for the rebate on fees paid at CRCs by submitting a Redemption Request Form (available at Northumberland.ca/WasteAndRecycling) along with a copy of the weigh-scale receipts. The county reminds residents that leaf and yard waste can be disposed of at the the CRCs with no charge for loads weighting less than 500 kg, (1,100 lb.).

Temporary increase in garbage set-out limits – Until June 3, garbage limits for curbside collection will be doubled to four bags. Bag weight will remain the same, with each bag of garbage limited to 20 kg. (44 lb.). Please remember that each bag set out for collection still requires a bag tag.

Scheduled leaf and yard-waste collection will proceed as planned. To ensure efficient removal, residents are reminded of the following guidelines.

  • Only grass clippings, branches, twigs, leaves and plant material (with all soil removed) will be accepted at curbside. Sod, soil, stumps, logs, root balls, rocks and stones are not accepted.

  • Brush must be tied into bundles no longer than one metre (three feet) in length, with materials no larger than five cm. (two inches) in diameter.

  • Each bag or bundle must be no heavier than 20 kg. (40 lb.).
