One of the last big civic events in the Town of Cobourg – just days before the COVID-19 outbreak was declared a pandemic – was the announcement of the 2020 inductees into the Cobourg and District Sports Hall of Fame.
Though there will not be a 2021 announcement, the organization has announced that it is seeking nominations for 2022 induction.
Nomination packages will be accepted until Sept. 30, with new inductees announced in March 2022. Applications already made for induction in 2021 will be considered among the 2022 nominations.
Election is restricted to athletes and builders of sports with a direct connection to the Cobourg and district area – defined as Alderville First Nation and the townships of Hamilton, Cramahe and Alnwick-Haldimand.
Athletes must be over the age of 35, and must have been active in their sports for at least five years (and retired for no fewer than three).
Builders include officials, referees, umpires, sponsors, executives, trainers, coaches, promoters and administrators. They must have been outstanding over an extended period of time.
Those announced next March will join those announced last March – Gord Brooks, Neil Cane, Rev. Dr. Kevin Fast, Margie Mathews, Dan Milligan, Ken Petrie, Fred Simpson and Clarke Sommerville, who will be formally inducted into the Cobourg and District Sports Hall of Fame at a dinner at the Best Western Cobourg Inn and Convention Centre when it is safe to hold such a celebration.
