Celebrate the royal baby by coming to tea

Boy or girl, arrived or still-impending, the new royal baby will be celebrated Saturday, May 4, at a Royal Baby Shower and Tea in Grafton.

Your host is the St. Andrew's United Church UCW. Admission is $5 plus a baby gift to be donated to the Cobourg women's shelter in honour of the new royal baby.

Anyone who attended their Royal Tea in honour of last year's nuptials of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will know what to expect, Sharron MacDonald said.

It was just what you imagine a formal tea to be – three-tiered serving dishes with scones, strawberry preserves, whipped cream, fancy sandwiches, little tea cakes, all presided over by white-gloved pourers with silver tea services.

And part of the pageantry actually walked in with the guests, as the women outdid each other with their fancy outfits and fascinators. There was even a kilt-clad gentleman who arrived in Scottish regalia.

The UCW group at St. Andrew's is always looking for something fun for everyone to enjoy, and last year's Royal Tea went so well that it seemed a great opportunity to adapt it to a baby theme. The napkins and balloons have baby animals, for example. And instead of the Royal Trivia game everyone enjoyed last year, the shower will have traditional baby-shower games.

The element of outreach is a new ingredient, and the baby gifts should be most welcome for those in the women's shelter with babies to care for.

“Everybody is looking forward to it, and everybody is welcome,” MacDonald said.

St. Andrew's is located at 137 Old Danforth Rd. in Grafton, and the shower runs from 1 to 3 p.m.
