Capitol Behind The Scenes session looks at Queer Icons

By Cecilia Nasmith

With special informative behind-the-scenes events planned for Prairie Nurse and Little Shop of Horrors, Port Hope's Capitol Theatre announces one in connection with their upcoming Mickey and Judy show – Queer Icons: How Public Figures Have Shaped Our Queer Community.

The July 25 panel discussion features the show's writer and star Michael Hughes.

It was Hughes's viewing of The Wizard of Oz as a child and how it ended up guiding his life that is the subject of this beautifully heartfelt solo show that has played to sold-out audiences around the world.

It runs from July 27 through Aug. 6 – but first, Hughes will make an appearance in the Capitol's Sculthorpe Theatre for this special panel discussion that also features musician-performer Melissa Payne, SONG Executive Director Miles Bowman and Capitol Artistic Director Rob Kempson.

The 7 p.m. event will highlight the impacts of icons of the queer community, their relevance today and what impact future generations may realize. From Judy Garland to the Indigo Girls, the panel will seek to unpack their on-going influence.

A sought-after cabaret and concert performer, Hughes was a featured guest of Grammy Award-winning producer David Foster on his sold-out North American tour David Foster & Friends. He was also the principal vocalist for the National Ballet of Canada's West Side Story Suite, and his self-titled album received a Toronto Independent Music Award nomination for Best Adult Contemporary Album.

You can reserve your seat for Mickey and Judy at capitoltheatre.com

And the website also offers tickets to the July 27 panel event at $5 each (free for members and subscribers).
