Adopt a Grandparent program is back

By Cecilia Nasmith

For the seventh consecutive year, Community Care Northumberland is pleased to support seniors throughout the county this holiday season with their Adopt a Grandparent program.

This initiative aims to spread holiday cheer by surprising seniors who may be experiencing isolation or loneliness with meaningful gifts.

“Adopt a Grandparent has shown us what coming together as a community can be all about, and how nice it is to give back in the true holiday spirit,” CCN Chief Executive Officer Trish Baird said in the announcement.

“Our community unites each year, bringing some happiness, joy and connections to those who need it most.”

And for some recipients, it's become a high point of their holiday season.

Members of the community interested in adopting a grandparent can call CCN at 1-866-514-5774 or e-mail wellness@commcare.ca to be matched with a senior. Purchased gifts can be dropped off at one of CCN's local offices before Dec. 8, so that it can be delivered by volunteers the week before Christmas.

CCN is also happy to accept donations to the Adopt a Grandparent program and do some of the shopping.

Gift cards for local stores are a good suggestion for Adopt a Grandparent participants, as well as gift certificates for such CCN programs as Meals on Wheels or Transportation.

And for those with special skills to share, please include any washing instructions for such hand-made items as scarves or mittens – and participants are asked to refrain from including home-made baked goods.
