After two years of modified programming, the Municipality of Port Hope is gearing up for a Canada Day full of in-person events and activities July 1.
Mayor Bob Sanderson said this is a change anticipated by many.
“Together with our community partners, we're hosting an impressive festival of music, food and culture, and welcoming our community to gather safely once again,” Sanderson said.
“Masks are not required at this event, but we respect everyone’s personal choices and comfort levels when it comes to wearing personal protective equipment at our events and activities.”
These include the return of such traditional favourites as the Canada Day parade, party in the park, wagon rides and live music.
“While July 1 celebrations are a tradition for many, it is important to recognize that Canada Day is not observed by all people in our country,” Sanderson continued.
“Reflecting on the origins of our land and the unique and heritage culture of First Nation, Inuit and Métis peoples who have shaped our country is imperative for all Canadians.”
New this year is the Penny for a Thought project, a community-engagement activity aimed at helping connect community members of all ages. In partnership with local artist Leslie Smith, the goal is to collect words of wisdom from Port Hope locals and hand out these phrases, along with a Canadian penny, at the event in Memorial Park.
Residents are invited to submit their thoughts or short, sage words of wisdom using the webform at porthope.ca/canada-day. Submissions will be collected until June 15.
Festivities begin at dusk on Thursday, June 30, when a Canada Day edition of Movies in the Park will feature Disney fan favourite Luca.
The following morning brings many ways to celebrate.
Canada Day Show 'n' Shine car show of antique, classic and custom vehicles from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Yoga In The Park, a guided stretch-out on the back lawn of Town Hall from 10 to 11 a.m.
Canada Day Parade starting at 11 a.m., on a route modified this year to accommodate Phase 1 of the Walton Street reconstruction project – Walton Street (from Pine Street to Queen Street), then Queen Street (from Walton Street to Robertson Street)
Refreshment Gardens open in Memorial Park at 11 a.m., hosted by the Port Hope and District Agricultural Society
Activity stations in the park run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Official opening ceremony at the bandshell begins at 11:45 a.m.
Wagon rides through historic downtown Port Hope run from noon to 3 p.m.
The schedule of live music in Memorial Park includes:
Joe Harvey and Cruisin' from noon to 2 p.m.
Soul Shakers Union from 2 to 4 p.m.
The Buzz from 4 to 6 p.m.
Martell x Walker from 6 to 8 p.m.
Storm The Palace from 8 to 10 p.m.
And at 10:15 p.m., the day concludes with a grand finale – a spectacular fireworks display launched at the pier.
