Seguin astounded at flood-reduction pond cost

By Cecilia Nasmith

Among items that go over budget, Cobourg Deputy Mayor Suzanne Seguin singled out the construction of the Kerr Street and Midtown Creek flood-reduction pond tender at Monday's committee-of-the-whole meeting.

Council approved the recommendation of Director of Public Works Laurie Wills to award the tender to Behan Construction Limited in the amount of $6,563,720.91, including non-refundable taxes. But Seguin felt compelled to add further information.

“In our recent budget deliberations, this item came in at $2.7-million. Now it's almost $7-million,” she pointed out.

In addition to the budgeted amount, Seguin said the money for this project is coming from development charges, the Small Communities fund, the Federal gas tax, the sanitary-sewer reserve, debentures and the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund.

“This was the highest item in our budget, but it was considerably higher here tonight,” the deputy mayor said.
