Beagle Club trails will now close weekdays

By Cecilia Nasmith

Northumberland County reminds everyone that Beagle Club trails – located west of Beagle Club Road, including north of Dunbar Road – will be temporarily closed weekdays throughout the winter to ensure the safety of trail users during timber-harvest operations that are expected to conclude by the end of March.

County Natural Heritage staff are working to ensure the trails are clear for weekend use, though trail users are encouraged to exercise caution and be on the look-out for debris on the trails from timber operations.

Those wishing to explore Northumberland County Forest trails during weekday closures are encouraged to visit the Woodland, Carstairs and Morris trails.

Timber harvesting maintains healthy forested lands, the county's press release stated, in accordance with forest-management best practices.

“Harvesting operations are an important part of Northumberland County's long-term plans to encourage and facilitate the conversion of Northumberland County Forest conifer plantations into a mixed-ecology forest,” the bulletin said.

“Biodiverse ecosystems are vital in fostering a healthy and sustainable forest.”

Anyone with questions regarding trail closures can contact Natural Heritage Services at forest@northumberlandcounty.ca or 1-800-354-7050 ext. 2303.
