Building upon the Violence Against Women Response Enhancement Project launched in April 2017, Cobourg Police Services have developed what is called a soft interview space at their downtown station in partnership with Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre.
The second-storey room has been updated from a standard table-and-chairs set-up to include a sofa, club chairs and soft finishings like rugs, artwork and soft lighting.
“Using a trauma-informed approach considers and understands the body's biological and neurological response to trauma,” Deputy Police Chief Paul VandeGraaf said in the Cornerstone press release.
“Evidence-based practices call for a trauma-informed approach to reports of rape and sexual assault, and a soft interview room is considered an integral component of this. We want to ensure we are resourced adequately so the community can receive the appropriate support during their vulnerable time.”
VandeGraaf displayed the room last week to Cornerstone executive director Nancy Johnston and manager of community engagement Janelle Eisler.
Johnston believes that creating a space that is comfortable rather than stark allows those reporting to feel physically and emotionally safe – which, in turn, can have a significant impact on the interview process.
“Gender-based violence, especially sexual assaults, goes largely unreported, and we want to empower those impacted to feel comfortable in coming forward and improve what has historically been a challenging experience with the criminal justice system,” she added.
The setting for the first instance of reporting can set the tone for ongoing services – hence, a warm and welcoming space can have a positive impact on those who report and provide a positive influence on how they proceed.
Those who have trauma-informed care from the outset are more likely to seek support in coping, whereas those who do not trauma-informed care find their suffering perpetuated rather than mitigated.
