Port Hope welcomes new fire chief

The Municipality of Port Hope is pleased to announced the appointment of Daniel Smith as Director of Emergency Services and Fire Chief.

As a member of senior management, Chief Smith's role will include responsibility for leading the Fire and Emergency Services Team (which includes Fire, Building and Municipal Bylaw Enforcement divisions).

The appointment was officially authorized by bylaw at the Nov. 17 council meeting.

“It is my absolute privilege to serve the municipality as the new Director of Fire and Emergency Services-Fire Chief,” he said in the announcement.

“I loo forward to collaborating with all members across fire, building-inspection services and municipal bylaw enforcement in an effort to provide service excellence to our community.”

The new chief is a seasoned firefighter with 20 years of fire-service experience in various leadership roles, most recently as Port Hope's Deputy Chief. Previously, he has held senior positions in the communities of Quinte West and Essex, as well as with Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. - Chalk River.

Dedicated to life-long learning, Chief Smith is a certified Fire Officer with a diploma in Fire Protection Engineering, an executive diploma in municipal management, and certifications in Fire Service Leadership, Fire Service Administration and Explosive Investigation. He is presently completing a Bachelor of Emergency management through Cape Breton University.

Port Hope Chief Administrative Officer David Smith offered his own welcome in the press release.

“He brings an exceptional skill set to the role with his strong leadership, considerable experience and on-going education in fire and emergency management,” Smith said.

“We look forward to working alongside Chief Smith at the municipality, and know he will receive a warm welcome by our community and local stakeholders.”
