Port Hope

Port Hope's Capitol Theatre hosted the municipality's 37th Civic Awards last week to honour the commitment and achievements of some outstanding local residents.

Determined through nominations, these awards recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the community in such fields as Agriculture, Arts and Culture, Athletics, Community Service, Inspiration and Philanthropy.

Northumberland 89.7 FM had two volunteers honoured – Andrea Patterson receiving the award for Community Service and Jordan Knight receiving the award for Arts and Culture.

As well this year, Morgan Kroeger received the Outstanding Youth Award and William F. Hubbs was honoured with the Outstanding Citizen Award, with Lou Pamenter receiving the Special Commendation award for her legacy of literature and good will.

Mayor Olena Hanikivsky stated that the passion and commitment of its people makes Port Hope thrive.

“The Civic Awards are a celebration of those who go above and beyond to strengthen our community,” Hankivsky said in the announcement.

“It's a privilege to join my fellow council members in acknowledging the outstanding people who make Port Hope such a vibrant and caring place to call home.”

With York Bell Smith serving as master of ceremonies, the packed house also enjoyed performance by such local talents as the Port Hope Piper (Brodrick Ewing), Kate Shur, Christine Rabey, Ontario Street Comedy Troupe and the Oakridge Mixed Chorus.

Afterwards, attendees enjoyed refreshments in the lobby from a selection of local businesses that included the Sunnyside Diner, French Affair, The Main, Jim's Pizza and Pasta, Regions, Bliss Bakeshop and The Thirsty Goose.

The nomination process for the next Civic Awards will open in December. For more details, visit porthope.ca/civic-awards
