Port Hope

As part of the Northumberland Learning Connection's fall series on space, Canada's first astronaut Marc Garneau will make an appearance at Port Hope's Capitol Theatre

Canada's first astronaut Marc Garneau will be at Port Hope's Capitol Theatre Thursday for a talk on why space is so important.

This appearance comes as part of the Northumberland Learning Connection's fall series on Space: Light Years and Dark Matter.

Garneau went into space 40 years ago and, in addition to a long and successful parliamentary career, he was President of the Canadian Space Agency from 2001-2005 and recipient of several honours from NASA. These include the Exceptional Service Medal in 1997 as well as Space Flight Medals awarded in 1984, 1996 and 2000.

Garneau's contention is that Canada was quick to realize the potential of space from the very beginning, contributing many pioneering initiatives of which Canadians can be justifiably proud.

Tickets for his talk are available for $25 on the NLC site. As for the Northumberland Learning Connection series, one final speaker remains, with Dr. Michael Byers appearing at Cobourg's Columbus Community Centre on Nov. 14 for a discussion of Who Owns Outer Space. Tickets are also available for this appearance for $25 at the NLC site.
