With purple scarves and Wrapped In Courage flags, Northumberland County has come through in demonstrating its support for ending gender-based violence

Nov. 25 marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and the first of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence – and Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre has marked the month by teaming up with police and fire services, townships and municipalities across the Northumberland County in raising Wrapped In Courage flags to show their support.

November is Woman Abuse Prevention Month, and the Wrapped In Courage campaign unites Violence Against Women shelters across Ontario to encourage communities to work together to create a future free of gender-based violence.

The press release from Cornerstone offered some statistics, including the fact that the Ontario Association of Interval and Transition Houses pegs the number of femicide victims since Nov 26 last year at 59. And last year, Cornerstone provided service to almost 2,000 local women, children and youth through shelter, counselling, housing and prevention programming.

Executive Director Nancy Johnston says that fighting gender-based violence is a job they cannot do alone.

“Our community plays an important role in addressing gender-based violence, and throughout November our community showed survivors that they are not alone,” Johnston said.

“Thank you to everyone who participated in the Wrapped In Courage campaign, whether you raised a flag, purchased a scarf or wore purple, your support to survivors and your commitment matters.”

Wrapped In Courage purple scarves and flags symbolize the courage needed by communities in supporting survivors of violence and ending the epidemic of intimate partner violence, gender-based violence and femicide across Ontario. Cornerstone is still selling hand-made purple Wrapped In Courage scarves – to purchase a scarf, or for more information, contact cfordham@cornerstonenorthumberland.ca
