Northumberland Paramedic Sean Johnston was honoured as one of 73 Ontario paramedics to receive the Governor General Emergency Medial Services Exemplary Service Medal bars – and one of only 14 to qualify for the Second Bar honour signifying 40 years of service

Northumberland Paramedic Sean Johnston was one of 73 Ontario paramedics who recently received their Governor General Emergency Medical Services Exemplary Service Medal bars.

This honour recognizes members of this service for providing exemplary emergency medical services for 30, 40 and 60 years – signified by presenting qualifying paramedics with their First, Second or Third Bars.

Johnston received his Second Bar for achieving 40 years of service to the community.

The late Governor General of Canada Romeo LeBlanc created this medal in 1994 as part of the Canadian Honours System, to honour paramedics who have provided the highest standard of care and conduct. To qualify, a paramedic must have at least 10 years of service in the field on active duty that involves provincial risk. Subsequent bars recognize additional decades of service – a First Bar for 30 years, a Second Bar for 40 years and a Third Bar for 50.

Out of the 73 recipients, Johnston was one of only 14 Second Bar recipients, with only two Third Bar recipients – Malcolm Gilpen of Elgin and Michael Sanderson of Hamilton.
