Northumberland County has announced plans to reconstruct the aging Burnley Bridge in the hamlet of Burnley on County Road 29 in Alnwick/Haldimand Township.

Originally built in 1950, the single-span bridge across Burnley Creek, just south of Noonan Road, has reached the end of its useful life.

Ongoing monitoring and assessments identified the need for major rehabilitation, however, given the costs and the need to meet current and future transportation demands, a full replacement is considered the most feasible solution.

The replacement project will enhance safety and bring the bridge up to modern standards.

The existing single-lane bridge will be replaced with a two-lane concrete rigid frame bridge to better accommodate current traffic needs.

Construction is anticipated to begin in the summer of 2025 and will require a full road closure on a section of County Road 29, lasting approximately four to six months, pending council approval. Speed reduction measures will also be permanently implemented to improve safety in the area.
