County accessibility advisory committee invites membership applications

Dec. 3 is International Day of Persons with Disabilities, and Northumberland County is inviting interested community members to apply for spots on its accessibility advisory committee until Dec. 6

With International Day of Persons with Disabilities approaching Dec. 3, the Northumberland Accessibility Advisory Committee is inviting community members with disabilities or related lived experiences to contribute their voices to help build a barrier-free future by sharing their thoughts, ideas and feedback to help inform the county's initiatives and programs.

The United Nations and communities around the world observe the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. In Northumberland County is recognizing the day with the theme Advocating for Accessibility Together to underscore the importance of collective action and collaboration among individuals, communities, organizations and governments to break down barriers and create inclusive environments.

Accessibility Co-ordinator Andrea Nicholson is also issuing a for dedicated individuals who are passionate about championing accessibility to join the county's accessibility advisory committee.

“Disabilities are only noticed because our society is not fully accessible,” committee chair Bobby-Jo Preston said in the press release.

“Our committee values the lived experience of its members to inform decisions that help improve accessibility for all community members. By working together, we can create a community where everyone can fully participate.”

Interested residents can submit an on-line application by Dec. 6 by visiting Northumberland.ca/NAAC. The form is also available in an alternate format by e-mailing accessibility@northumberland.ca or calling 905-372-3329 ext. 2327.
