COBOURG

The annual celebration of Christmas that lights up Cobourg is planned for Nov. 22, with more than 200,000 lights blazing along the waterfront

As of Nov. 22, more than 200,000 lights will blaze along the waterfront for the annual Christmas Magic in Cobourg celebration.

It's a tradition that began in the early 1990s, lighting up Victoria Park and the waterfront, kicked off with an evening of community celebration. This year's event will include a new outdoor Holiday Market in Rotary Waterfront Park, horse-and-wagon rides at the Albert Street transit shelter, and live music by the Queen tribute band Scaramouche.

“This year's addition of the outdoor Holiday Market adds a new layer of festive fun, making it a perfect opportunity to find unique gifts, enjoy seasonal treats and share in the joy of the season,” Manager of Culture Jackie Chapman-Davis said in the announcement.

The evening's schedule has the market open from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The Christmas music will begin at 6 p.m. at Victoria Hall (55 King St. W.), followed by a welcome ceremony and the lighting of that downtown landmark.

At 6:30 p.m., the lighted walk down Second Street to Rotary Harbourfront Park begins. Residents are encouraged to bring along a non-perishable donation for the local food bank to exchange for a candle.

At the park, Mayor Lucas Cleveland will lead a 7 p.m. countdown to light-up time, followed by music by Scaramouche.

Thereafter, the lights will be on every evening through Jan. 5 from dusk until 10 p.m. Take your time to explore the many surprises throughout Rotary Harbourfront Park and Victoria Park – spiral trees, holiday cut-outs, holiday vignettes, reindeer and other festive animals.

Christmas Magic is one of Cobourg's most beloved annual events, made possible through the hard work and collaboration of the town's departments and its amazing community volunteers.

Please note that King Street between Third and Division will be closed Nov. 22 from 4 to 8 p.m. Residents are encouraged to come along Albert Street to access the Second Street and Albert Street parking lots.
