Community Care Northumberland's eighth annual Adopt A Grandparent program support seniors throughout the county

Community Care Northumberland announces the launch of its eighth annual Adopt A Grandparent program in support of seniors throughout the county this holiday season.

This program spreads joy by surprising seniors who may be experiencing isolation or loneliness with meaningful holiday gifts. Last year, more than 130 “grandparents” got a wonderful surprise.

Along with these smiles of appreciation, Chief Executive Officer Trish Baird said in the announcement, there were smiles from the many individuals and families who join together to find the right gift – and the volunteers and staff who make the deliveries.

Baird shared some of the comments they have received from past adopted grandparents.

“Thank you for the Christmas gift. I was feeling down, and it made my spirits brighter! This gift meant so much to me. It brought happy tears to my eyes.”

“Thank you for my wonderful Christmas gift. It was an amazing surprise that made my Christmas so much brighter.”

This year, community members interested in adopting a grandparent can contact CCN at 1-866-514-5774 or wellness@commcare.ca to be matched with a senior.

Gift suggestions include gift cards for local stores or gift certificates for Community Care Northumberland programs (such as Meals on Wheels or transportation services).
Participants are asked to refrain from including home-made baked goods, and to include washing instructions for hand-made items such as scarves and mittens.

As well, participants can adopt a senior and make a donation for them to Community Care, where staff members will do the shopping.

Gifts can be dropped off at a local Community Care office – unwrapped, or in gift bags or baskets – on or before Friday, Dec. 6. Deliveries will be made the week before Christmas.
