COBOURG

The new banners downtown honouring local veterans are the latest Remembrance initiative from the Town of Cobourg and Branch 133 of the Royal Canadian Legion.

Leading up to Remembrance Day, the Town of Cobourg has partnered with Branch 133 of the Royal Canadian Legion on a new commemorative program – hanging banners that honour local veterans past and present.

With information and photos from the Legion, 45 banners in all will be on display along King Street and the downtown, thanks to the donation of local community members who wish to honour the memory and the service of loved ones.

They will be on display through Nov. 18, and it is hoped members of the community will take the time to stroll past them and learn some of the stories behind each one. You can also follow Experience Cobourg on social media, where town staff will be sharing their own insights and narratives that highlight the significance of these commemorations.

The town is grateful to the Cobourg Legion for their partnership in this initiative, the announcement said, and hopes to see the banner program grow as people learn of this special opportunity to pay tribute to those who placed themselves in harm's way to protect our freedoms. As always the Cobourg Remembrance Day ceremony takes place Nov. 11 at the cenotaph in Victoria Park. The parade will form up in front of the Legion branch on Orr Street at 10 a.m., heading north on Hibernia, east on King Street, then south on McGill to the park for the 10:30 a.m. ceremony – with the Cobourg Police Service effecting appropriate road closures.

Later that day, the Legion will host its traditional Remembrance Day dinner, with cocktails at 4:30 p.m. and dinner at 5 p.m. Tickets are $20 for non-service members, on sale at the bar at Legion headquarters (135B Orr St.).

And traditionally running from the last Friday of October through Nov. 11, the Poppy Campaign will offer the chance to show you honour the sacrifices of Canadian veterans in support of the freedoms we enjoy today.

Donations collected from these sales are held in trust at the branch level for direct support of veterans and their families in the community. The assistance they make possible takes various forms, such as grants for food, heating, housing, medical equipment, home repairs, and emergency shelter and assistance.

Finally, for this history-minded, there is the opportunity to walk through Cobourg's military history on the Poppy Trail, a self-guided tour that features charming period architecture and streetscapes while sharing Cobourg's significant wartime contributions. A virtual tour booklet to guide you can be found at ExperinceCobourg.ca
