The recent tragic death of Kory Trenouth brought into sharp focus the impact of the opioid crisis in Northumberland County. Then, last week, the Haliburton, Kawartha Pine Ridge District Health Unit released an opioid alert warning illegal drug users about the possibility of overdosing or potential poisons in the drug supply.
The first interview on today’s show hones in on the continuing opioid crisis in the county. As of July 5, there were 64 overdoses in Northumberland. Last year, the total was 152. The health unit does not track the number of deaths locally.
Lesley McLaughlin, the harm reduction coordinator, will give insight into what is currently going on and help explain the details of what is being done.
The second segment today takes us in a different direction. There is lots of bad news when it comes to the economy these days. Inflation is skyrocketing. Interest rates are hitting levels we have not seen in decades. The federal government is trying to avoid a recession.
In the midst of all of this, the Northumberland Community Futures Development Corporation, or CDFC, announced it received a $7.7 million grant to help 145 businesses and help create or maintain 500 jobs in Southern Ontario. It is a massive undertaking at a critical time in the economy.
Wendy Curtis and John Hayden, of the CDFC, will explain what this is all about.
