Consider This Northumberland - July 15: Homeless Seniors

As of last week, there was an 80-year-old senior living in his car. According to Debbie Wood, an intensive housing support worker with the Help Centre, she is not quite sure where he is. The last time she spoke with him, he was told he could not sleep in his car where he had parked. He had to move on. So, he decided to go deeper into hiding, where nobody would bother him.

Today’s show looks at the struggles of seniors. It looks at the growing number of homeless seniors in Northumberland County. Debbie Wood will tell us all about it. Close to half her caseload are seniors facing homelessness.

But that is not the only hardship facing seniors right now. With inflation at nearly eight percent, many seniors on fixed incomes are struggling. Trish Baird, CEO of Community Care Northumberland, will shed light on the difficulties the people she helps are facing as the price of groceries, gas, and other essentials rise.
