Cobourg Police are investigating an alleged theft early this morning.

At approximately 12:30 a.m., while on general patrol, police observed a dark blue or black four-door vehicle (possibly a Lexus) with light-coloured rims, no front licence plate and an obstructed back licence plate, exiting a gas station on Division Street.

As soon as police positioned themselves behind the vehicle to initiate a traffic stop, the vehicle accelerated rapidly, reaching speeds in excess of 100 km/h.

The vehicle continued northbound on Highway 45 and turned off its headlights. Due to public safety concerns, officers did not initiate a pursuit.

Police allege that a lone male entered the store. Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
