Leadership within the Municipality of Brighton will hold a special Christmas Eve meeting to set out the process for appointing a new councillor.

Byron Faretis died November 19, following a battle with cancer. Council passed a resolution last week seeking to fill the vacancy for the term expiring in 2026.

A report from staff to Council suggests the application period starts next week.

“Following Council's approval, the Clerk and Communications staff will publish another notice to the public regarding the application process and all required documentation to allow interested applicants to submit beginning January 2, 2025 at 9:00 am through to January 17, 2025 at 2:00 pm.,” stated the report.

The urgency of the appointment comes as staff explained there are significant council considerations on the horizon.

“It should be noted that there is very little ‘wiggle room’ with the timeline given the holiday season, regular meetings of Council and Committees, the 2025 budget meetings, the ROMA conference, and the deadline for Council to appoint its new member on or before February 7, 2025,” the report said.

If the process is approved, staff will launch a communications campaign with the public on the application process.
